Firestone Agric. Workers Union calls on Senate to concur with House of Rep.on amended Decent Work Act

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Firestone Agriculture Workers Union of Liberia (FAWUL) is calling on the Liberian Senate to concur with the House of Representatives, on the recent amendment made in the Decent Work Act of 2015.

The House of Representatives on December 16, 2021, amended Chapter 22.1, 30.1(b) and 37.1 of the Decent Work Act, and forwarded the document to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.

Chapter 22.1 transferred the issue of retirement and pension from the company of employment to the National Social Security and Welfare Cooperation, while 37.1 empowers the National Union to exclusively bargain on behalf of the local unions.

In the petition, FAWUL Chairman, Rodennick Bongorlee, to the Senate that workers and retirees of Firestone are in support of the amendment, and called on the Senate not to give credence to the statement of rejection made by the Liberia Labor Congress (LLC).

Receiving the petition, the Senate Committee Chairman on Labor, Wellington Geevon Smith, disclosed plans to conduct public hearings involving the LLC, stakeholders and policy makers to address challenging issues concerning the Decent Work Act.
