Gov’t orders resumption of Bea Mountain’s activities

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has ordered the return of normal activities of the Bea Mountain Company in Grand Cape County.

Government’s order was rendered on Sunday, January 16, 2022, in order to allow its mediation team to take the necessary steps to amicably resolve the conflict between the Company’s Management and workers.

According to a release issued over the weekend, the mandate followed two days of dialogue among citizens of Kinjor Community, workers union and the Management of Bea Mountain, as well as lawmakers of the County held at the Labor Ministry in Monrovia.

The release said during the discussion, the citizens and workers presented a fourteen-count petition to the Liberian Government for consideration by Bea Mountain Management.

However, Labor Minister Charles Gibson said:” Any agreement arising from the negotiation will be guided by a compliance mechanism, which includes penalties for breach as well as considering monitoring committee.”

Minister Gibson said a committee comprising representatives from the Company’s Management, workers’ union and the Liberian Government will assess the records of the Company from 2009 up to present.

The Labor Minister assured citizens and workers that the Labor Ministry is determined to ensure no casual workers will go underground, while all casual workers will now be considered contractors at the Company.
