Mano River Union convenes Security, Peace, and Democracy Conference in Monrovia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-A two-day Security, Peace and Democracy Conference of Mano River countries has opened in Monrovia.

The conference is organized by the Mano River Union Secretariat.

Liberia’s Foreign Minister Dee-Maxwell Kemayah credited President George Weah for advancing the conference.

Foreign Minister Kemayah noted that President Weah’s intention is to promote peace, security and democracy governance among Mano River Union Countries.

Also speaking, the Foreign Minister of Sierra Leone, David Francis, said the consolidation of peace, security and inclusive development remains critical to MRU Countries, and called for practical steps in addressing those challenges.

He pointed out that the current political situation in Guinea poses threats to the peace and stability in the Mano River Union basin, pledging his country’s commitment in working along with member states and ECOWAS to return Guinea to constitutional order.

At the same time, the Head of the MRU Secretariat, Madina Wesseh, said:” The MRU is well suited to initiate a solution based approach in resolving the political situation in Guinea.”

Ambassador Wesseh cautioned regional and international bodies to adopt practical actions towards solving the Guinean crisis.

She then noted that Guinea cannot be left alone in such a critical time, and called for concerted efforts to return that Country to constitutional order.

Ambassador Wesseh feared that terrorists plying the Sahel Corridor could take advantage of the political situation in Guinea, to threaten the peace of the MRU.
