Senate calls on Gov’t to take collective blame for Niko Ivanka Shipwreck

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Senate has endorsed the report of its Committee on Security, calling on the Liberian Government to take collective responsibility of the Niko Ivanka shipwreck.

The sinking of the vessel left several persons dead, and properties damaged in July this year.

The Committee noted that the National Port Authority (NPA) and the Liberia Maritime Authority (LMA) reneged on their responsibility of ensuring that ships sailing Liberian waters comply with safety standards.

The committee noted that the uncoordinated approach between the line agencies led to the unfortunate situation.

Meanwhile, the Liberian Senate has mandated its Committee on Judiciary to craft a resolution capturing the detail of safety measures and liabilities of government to the victims.
