Min. Sonii and Sen. Tokpa divided over creation of a Ministry on Higher Education

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Education Minister Ansu Sonii and Bong County Senator Henrique Tokpa are partially divided over whether the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) should be elevated to a ministerial Status.

Senator Tokpa has already introduced a bill at the Legislature seeking to elevate the Commission to Ministry.

The Bong County Senator said:” The National Commission on Higher Education deserves to be independent to perform effectively, and that monitoring of higher education institutions by the Education Ministry has always been a problem, and as such elevating the Commission to a Ministry will change the narrative.”

However, Minister Sonii said:” The plan is not timely and, instead, called for more budgetary support to the Commission.”

He noted that providing increase financial support to the NCHE will ensure adequate supervision and monitoring regime.
