Ghanaian Gov’t extends Liberian Refugee Camp’s demolition

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Ghanaian Authorities have given Liberian Refugees a three-month extension period to vacate the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Gomoa District, in the Central Region of Ghana.

The Ghanaian Government had earlier planned to demolish the refugee settlement by the start of October this year, after an initial ultimatum expired on September 30, 2021.

Speaking with ELBC Wednesday, October 6, 2021, the Head of the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC), Rev. Festus Logan, lauded President George Weah for his intervention in the demolition of the settlement.

Rev. Logan said:” With the time extended, there are ongoing discussion with the United Nations Refugee Agency and the Ghanaian Authorities on the next plan of action.”

He, however, encouraged Liberian Refugees who have not registered for local integration to consider the grace period and begin returning home.

In a recent interview with the Ghanaian media, the refugees maintained that they will not leave the camp until the Ghanaian Government meet up with what they called three durable solutions, under the International Refugee Conventions.

The solutions are voluntary repatriation, integration and resettlement.
