Com. on Small Arms engages Lawmakers, others

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberia National Commission on Small Arms (LiNCSA) has begun engaging Lawmakers and civil society stakeholders on the speedy passage of the Proposed Draft Amendments to Domesticate Firearms Control Legislations.

The draft amendment proposals seek to harmonize the two domestic firearm legislations with the global Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), by integrating key provisions of the ATT on trade and transfer of conventional arms in the existing Firearms and Ammunition Control Act.

According to a LiNCSA release issued recently, the draft proposal will further expand the mandate of the Small Arms Commission beyond small arms, and light weapons to cover all conventional arms.

The release quotes the Chairman of the LiNCSA, Atty. Teklo Maxwell Grigsby, as saying the passage of the proposals will make Liberia the first West African Country to domesticate the Arms Trade Treaty into its national law, in terms of control and regulation of firearms.

Mr. Grigsby expressed gratitude to Expertise France for the support that has provided him the privilege to engage Members of the National Legislature, Civil Society Organizations and the Liberian Media.
