Liberian Gov. receives COVID-19 Vaccines

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has received the first batch of ninety-six-thousand doses of COVID-19 Vaccines.

According to Health Authorities, the vaccines were made possible by the COVAX Initiative, a partnership between CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO Country Representative, Dr. Peter Clement and UNICEF Deputy Representative for Programs, Samuel Mawun-ga-ni-dze, presented the vaccines to the Liberian Government Saturday, March 6, 2021, at the Roberts International Airport, in Lower Margibi County.

During the presentation, Dr. Clement described the arrival of the vaccines as historic steps towards intensifying the fight against the Coronavirus in Liberia.

For his part, Mr. Mawun-ga-ni-dze urged Liberians to continue adhering to the preventive measures, despite the arrival of the vaccines in the Country.

According to him, UNICEF will continue to play its role as a key delivery partner, and provide the technical support to ensure COVID-19 Vaccines are safely delivered for the launch of the immunization campaign.

At the same time, United States Ambassador to Liberia, Michael McCarthy, says the Country’s successful fight against COVID-19 has gotten a major boost with the arrival of the vaccines.

Ambassador McCarthy said:” It is the hope of partners that the vaccines will protect healthcare workers on the frontline and the most vulnerable throughout the Country.”

According to the US Ambassador, his Government, through USMD, is providing support to the Health Ministry’s COVID-19 Vaccination Deployment Plan.

He said:” The next challenge that the Liberian Government is to grapple with is getting the logistics to administer the vaccines with the right information.”

For his part, UN Resident Coordinator, Neil Scout, said:” The United States is pleased with the COVID-19 Vaccines coordination among its member states.”
