ECOWAS Regional leaders to support Senegal for AU Chairmanship

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah and other leaders in the ECOWAS Region have agreed to support Senegal for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU).

AU Member States are expected to go to the polls to elect a new chairman for the continental body next year.

Information Minister Ledgerhood Rennie told ELBC Tuesday, February 2, 2021, that President Weah and his counterparts reached the decision during a virtual meeting of the Extraordinary Session of ECOWAS Heads of State and Governments.

Minister Rennie said:” It was also agreed that Nigeria represents the ECOWAS Region on the Political, Peace and Security Affairs Commission at the AU.”

According to him, Burkina Faso has been tipped to represent the ECOWAS Bloc on the AU’s Commission on Human, Social and Humanitarian Affairs for next year’s election.

Meanwhile, Minister Ledgerhood Rennie said President Weah, during the meeting, recommitted Liberia’s support to the principles and ideals of ECOWAS and the AU.
