CSOs Working Groups on Land Rights caution stakeholders’ commitment to Land Rights regulations

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Liberian Civil Society Working Groups on Land Rights is cautioning stakeholders to commit themselves in the development and implementation of regulations adopted on Customary Land and Tribal Certificate to safe guard the Land Rights Law.

The Land Rights Working Groups Coordinator, Alphonso Henneries, said: “In spite of existing working relationship with the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), the working Groups is disappointed on the failure of development and implementation of the regulations”.

Mr. Henneries on Monday, November 16, 2020, made the call when he addressed relevant land issues confronting the country’s land sector.

The Land Working Groups is also calling for translation to break down the legal ambiguities in the law and more awareness creation to avoid some elites and well-placed personalities carry on land grab in the process.

According to Mr. Henneries, the Working Groups contribution to the adoption of two regulations on Customary Land and Tribal Certificate, and has contributed immensely to protect and fully restore Customary Land rights to rural Liberian communities.

The Land Rights Working Groups consists of 34 civil society organizations nationwide have worked immensely towards the Liberian land reform, until the passage into law the Land Rights Law, in 2018, by the Liberian Legislature, providing the rights to land ownership to Liberians.

The Liberia Land Authority (LLA) is responsible to develop, regulate, guard all land matters, and to implement the law.
