Agriculture Ministry awards contracts to several agri-businesses

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Agriculture has awarded contracts to several potential agri-businesses in the rice and cassava sectors of Liberia.

The Ministry said:” The contracts were awarded to the agro- businesses as part of its COVID-19 Emergency Response Plan that seeks to mitigate the impact of the virus.”

According to a release issued Thursday, September 3, 2020, the Agriculture Ministry disclosed that the virus has negatively impacted many farmers and other actors of the agriculture Sector.

Meanwhile, the President of the National Cassava Sector Coordinating Committee (NCSCC), Joseph Morris, said:” The promise of President George Weah, that Liberians will not become spectators in their own economy is becoming a reality for agro -businesses.”

Mr. Morris said with the provision of about one-point-one-million United States Dollar worth of contracts for the six cassava entrepreneurs, thousands of lives of smallholder cassava producers and other faming households will be greatly affected.

He said:” The contracts to the famers demonstrate President Weah’s commitment to empowering local businesses, and his belief that Agriculture Minister, Jeanie Cooper, is the right person capable of working with all actors to move the country’s agriculture sector forward.”
