Hundreds Protest Against Rape

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Hundreds of Liberians Tuesday took to the streets of Monrovia to protest against rape in Liberia.

The protesters included youth groups, musicians, women, and human right activists among others.

According to our reporter, the protesters gathered at the grounds of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Capitol to draw Government’s attention on the crime.

At the Foreign Ministry, they requested the presence of President George Weah to receive their petition which contains several penalties for rapists.

However, Gender Minister, WilliametteSaydee-Tarr, was designated by the President to receive the petition.

But, our reporter said, the protesters did not present the petition, demanding that their request be received by President Weah.

At the same time, Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Williamette Saydee-Tarr, has assured Government will take urgent action to end rape in Liberia.

Minister Saydee-Tarr said the Government is aware of the pain and grieve of citizens including families of rape victims.

According to her, the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Sexual and Gender Based Violence issues is currently reviewing all options in line with the law.

Minister Saydee-Tarr said a roadmap document to end the impunity of rape in the Country has been completed and presented to President for further action.

Speaking to the protesting citizens against rape Tuesday in Monrovia, the Gender Minister called for a thorough review of the ape, children and domestic violence laws.

The recent increasing wave of rape cases being reported across the Country has generated widespread condemnations from Liberians home and abroad.
