Liberia Nat’l Police arrest six protesters…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Police in Monrovia have arrested six persons in connection with a violent protest Thursday, June 25, 2020, in Paynesville and Sinkor.

Police Spokesman Moses Carter told ELBC Thursday, June 25, 2020, that the six persons were arrested when they set ablaze tires on the road, thereby obstructing the free movement of other Liberians and residents.

According to Mr. Carter, the demonstrators were protesting about what they say is an increase in the tariff of mobile data and voice calls.

The Police Spokesman assured that those behind Thursday’s violence would be apprehended and prosecuted.

He said:” The police have begun compiling its report to ascertain the full extent of damage caused as a result of the protest.”

Meanwhile, the Government of Liberia has warned that it will not tolerate acts of violence and lawlessness from any group of people that seeks to disrupt the country’s hard earned peace.

The caution comes in the wake of violent activities that damaged property and disrupted free movement on the Tubman Boulevard and the Old Road Community on Thursday morning, June 24, 2020, by some members of the self-styled Council of Patriots group.

Justice Minister Frank Musah Dean, Jr. has been ordered to ensure that all perpetrators and their masterminds are arrested, in order to face the full weight of the law.

In a statement, the Government says it recognizes that free expression and freedom to engage in political activities are guaranteed under the law, but violence will not be tolerated.
