Liberians Mark Decoration Day Wednesday, Following Gov’t’s Proclamation

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Liberians and foreign residents alike are poised to observe Decoration Day today, Wednesday, March 11, 2020.

As a tradition in Liberia, the celebration is usually characterized by the cleaning of grave sites by family members to honor the dead, while at the same time expressing grieves in remembrance of their contributions.

The celebrations of Decoration Day followed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the Second Wednesday in March, every year as a “Decoration Day” and it is to be observed throughout the Republic as a National Holiday.

The proclamation is in consonance with the 1916 Act of the Legislature, declaring Second Wednesday in March as Decoration Day.

A Foreign Ministry release issued Tuesday, March 11, 2020 says the day is in recognition of the nation’s past heroes and heroines who have lived and died in the interest of their country.

The proclamation further states that it is befitting that a day be set aside to celebrate the memory of the dead and to keep alive their deeds and invaluable contributions ton society.
