MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Managing Director of the World Bank, Pascal Donohue, says the Bank is aiming to provide adequate support to Liberia’s power generation sector.
Donohue assured the Liberian Government of the Bank’s resolve to support the country’s future and its dedication to being a reliable and strategic partner to Liberia.
He spoke to reporters over the weekend after an official visit to the Mount Coffee Hydropower facility to inspect ongoing repair works on Turbine-Unit-1 and the 20-megawatt solar farm currently undergoing testing.
The solar facility is expected to inject clean and sustainable energy into the national grid, complementing hydropower and thermal generation and strengthening energy reliability.
Donohue was accompanied by a high-level delegation from the World Bank, African Development Bank, International Finance Corporation, European Union, Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission, and senior officials of the government.
Meanwhile, Finance and Development Planning Minister, Augustine Ngafuan, has described the visit as a strong demonstration of partnership and conveyed Liberia’s gratitude to the World Bank for its continued support.
Minister Ngafuan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing and future energy projects.
Speaking earlier, the Deputy Managing Director for Operations at the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Thomas Gonkerwon, expressed appreciation for the Bank’s sustained support through financing, technical assistance, and capacity-building initiatives.
According to him, these initiatives are aimed at strengthening utility performance and enhancing customer-focused service delivery.
