MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) has called for urgent and structured regional action to confront the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation across West Africa.
LBS maintained that public broadcasters are operating in an increasingly volatile information environment with the emergence of fake news.
The Deputy Director General of Public Affairs, Alexandra Amnon, made the remarks at ECOWAS 2nd Meeting of Directors-General of State Media, in Cotonou, Benin.
Representing the LBS Director General, Madam Amnon stated public service media must not be treated as ceremonial institutions, but rather as strategic pillars of democracy, accountability, and regional stability.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the Liberia Broadcasting System to guarantee access to verified information, promoting civic literacy, and strengthening democratic participation.
Meanwhile, Madam Amnon says the Management of the LBS is expanding broadcast access to underserved communities and upholding professional journalism.
She warned that regional integration will not succeed if citizens do not fully understand its fundamental concept.
According to her, ECOWAS Vision 2050 risks remaining only a policy framework, unless public media institutions are deliberately integrated into the communication architecture.
She made the remarks on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the end of the ECOWAS 2nd Meeting of Directors-General of State Media in Cotonou, Benin.
The LBS Deputy Director General for Public Affairs highlighted ongoing reforms, including strengthening newsroom verification systems and expanding governance programming to promote accountability dialogue.
Alexandra Amnon then called for concrete structural outcomes from the meeting, including the establishment of a formal ECOWAS-Public Media Coordination Mechanism to counter disinformation.
