Gov’t of Liberia Refutes Social Media Statement Attributed to Liberia’s Amb. Browne on Middle East War

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has refuted a statement circulating on social media, attributed to Liberia’s Ambassador, Lewis Browne, on the war in the Middle East.

The statement reportedly condemned recent military actions in the Middle East and expressed support for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Foreign Ministry described the statement as fake, emphasizing that it was entirely fabricated to contradict the country’s established foreign policy of diplomatic practices.

The Foreign Ministry said as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Liberia continues to coordinate closely with its African Union partners through the A-3 framework to advance common African positions on global issues.

The Foreign Ministry clarified that Liberia has only spoken once on the matter as part of the joint A-3 statement delivered during the UN Security Council session on February 28, 2026.

It condemned the dissemination of the statement as only misleading, but dangerous to the safety and interests of Liberia and its citizens, both at home and abroad.

Meanwhile, the ministry released an advisory underscoring the government’s deep concern for the safety and well-being of Liberians in the Middle East.

In the advisory, the ministry urged all Liberians residing in the countries of the Middle East that are affected by the ongoing attacks to remain attentive to communications and follow the instructions provided by their respective embassies.

The government said that each Liberian Embassy in the region has issued, or is in the process of issuing, an advisory relevant to Liberians and their respective jurisdictions.

The advisory, according to the Foreign Ministry, is intended to provide Liberian citizens with information that would be pertinent to their safety and security.

Meanwhile, the government is encouraging Liberians residing in the Middle East to contact the embassy responsible for their country of residence to obtain specific guidance and updates, as the advisories are designed to safeguard citizens and provide timely information on matters of importance.

At the same time, the government has confirmed several arrests have been made in connection with the death of a Liberian national, Austin Tengbeh, in Accra, Ghana.

In a video that went viral on social media on Saturday, February 28, 2026, the deceased, Tengbeh, aged twenty-six, can be seen mobbed to death.

According to a government statement, the Liberian Embassy in Accra was informed about the situation and immediately initiated contacts with the relevant Ghanaian authorities, including the Crime Unit of the Sakumono District Police, to obtain verified details regarding the incident.

It said information provided by the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the matter is currently under active investigation.

It said that the Liberian Embassy in Accra was informed that arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals believed to be involved.

The Government of Liberia said it is making efforts to formally engage the next of kin of the deceased in order to provide appropriate consular assistance and support.
