MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has decided to withdraw from the race for a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council in favor of Benin.
Disclosing on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the Information Ministry Press Briefing, Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs, Daniel Sando, explained that the decision was taken in the interest of promoting regional peace, unity, and cooperation.
Minister Sando noted that the move takes into consideration the evolving security challenges in the Sahel Sub-region, which require collective regional attention and stronger collaboration.
He stressed that Liberia remains fully committed to supporting joint efforts aimed at addressing security threats and maintaining stability across West Africa.
According to him, the decision followed wide consultations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Security Advisor, and Liberia’s diplomatic team in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In another development, the Ministry of Justice has begun strict enforcement of vehicle and traffic laws throughout Liberia.
The Ministry clarified that the use of sirens and emergency lights is now limited to the police, fire service, and other designated emergency vehicles during genuine emergencies.
Minister Sando warned that motorists who violate traffic regulations will face citations, vehicle seizure, fines, and possible prosecution in keeping with the law.
The Deputy Minister disclosed that law enforcement officers have been instructed to ensure full compliance with regulations without favoritism or political interference.
Deputy Minister Daniel Sando urged drivers and the general public to cooperate with authority and respect traffic rules to help reduce accidents and protect lives.
