ECOWAS Condemns Attempted Military Takeover Reports in Benin

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-ECOWAS has condemned reports of an attempted military takeover in Binin.

It followed a communication received by the Regional Bloc on Sunday, December 7, 2025, of an attempted coup in that West African nation.

In a release on Sunday, ECOWAS called for full respect for the Constitution of Benin, recognizing the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in bringing the situation under control.

The Regional Body has since vowed to hold leaders of the attempted plot, both individually and collectively, responsible for their actions.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS says it remains committed to supporting the government and people of Benin, including the deployment of a standby force to defend the constitution and territory of that country.
