In recent years, the Government of Liberia has taken significant steps toward abolishing capital punishment.
In 2022, the Liberian Senate passed a bill to remove the death penalty from the national law, though the legislation still awaits full approval from the House of Representatives.
International partners, including the European Union (EU), the United Nations, and human rights organizations, are encouraging Liberia to fulfill its commitment to abolish the death penalty.
The Charge’s affairs of the British Embassy, Simon Tooth, has called on the Government of Liberia to pass into law the Abolition of the Death Penalty.
If the House of Representatives approves the pending bill, Liberia will officially become a death penalty–free nation, aligning with many African countries that have already taken this historic step.
