MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Education Minister Dr. Jarso Jallah has termed Liberia’s first win at the African Union Continental Best Teacher Awards as a “defining moment” for the nation’s education system.
The announcement was made during a high-level ceremony in Monrovia, attended by national leaders, international partners, and members of the press.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Jallah emphasized that the victory marks a shift from past narratives of dysfunction toward a future of promise and excellence.
She stressed the importance of sustained national representation on global platforms that uplift educators, calling it a new chapter for Liberian teaching.
She also underscored the role of teacher licensing and accreditation reforms in positioning Liberia for continental recognition.
Dr. Jallah added that Liberia’s participation in the 2025 AFTRA Conference in Lubango, Angola, was pivotal.
It was at this gathering of Africa’s leading teaching regulatory authorities that the Ministry of Education successfully advocated for Liberia’s inclusion in the African Union’s Continental Best Teacher Awards.
That strategic engagement led to the nomination and eventual selection of Allen Thomas.
The program honored Thomas, a physics teacher from Tapae Memorial High School in Nimba County, whose grassroots impact in STEM education and rural reform has inspired students and educators alike.
His work in hands-on science instruction and his founding of the Best Teacher Initiative have elevated teaching standards and empowered youth in underserved communities.
