Gov. of Liberia Begins Urgent Interventions to Bring Relief to Flood Victims…

RIVERECSS COUNTY, LIBERIA-Government of Liberia has begun urgent intervention to bring relief to flood victims in Rivercess County.

A combined team from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) arrived on Saturday, October 5, 2024, and is conducting a first-hand assessment of the situation.

ELBC Reporter traveling with the joint Government of Liberia Team reported massive flooding of the Cesstos River, leaving the two bridges connecting Grand Bassa to Rivercess Counties onwards to Southeastern Liberia completely submerged, with the Cesstos waters moving at break-neck speed.

He named the only mode of transportation across the two bridges as motorized canoes that carry only a limited number of passengers and a minimum quantity of load.

The situation, he said, has left residents of the area stranded with prices of basic commodities and transportation fares skyrocketing.

Among other things, the ELBC Reporter quoted residents of the area as saying the flood has made schools inaccessible, leaving many students out of school and polluting their water sources.

He said some local businesses have also been adversely affected, with their wares and goods submerged in the waters.

There is also an urgent need for humanitarian support to avert the outbreak of waterborne diseases and hunger-related complications, the ELBC Reporter said.
