UN Women Rep.to Liberia Calls on Women to Be Transformational…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The UN Women Representative to Liberia, Comfort Lamptey, has called on women to be transformational leaders to foster peace, reconciliation, and gender equality in Liberia.

Madam Lamptey wants women to work together to formulate policies that will promote gender equality and social justice.

She noted that fair and equal representation of women in the leadership and decision-making process remains a major challenge in Liberia.

Representative Lamptey expressed the UN Women’s readiness to work along with Liberian women leaders to lead an effort towards inclusive women representation in national leadership.

Madam Comfort Lamptey made the remarks on Friday, August 30, 2024, during a Networking Dinner with elected and appointed women leaders organized by the Gender Ministry in collaboration with the Women’s Legislative Caucus and UN Women, held at the Gender Ministry in Congo Town.

Also speaking at the Dinner, Gender Minister Gbeme Horace Kollie reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advocating for a more inclusive participation in leadership.

Minister Kollie said:” Despite Liberia’s commitment to gender equality as a signatory to several international and regional agreements, the underrepresentation of women in elected and appointed positions remains a pressing issue.”

Minister Kollie noted that the imbalance of women in local statutory leadership positions highlights the need for more advocacy and reform.

The Gender Minister lauded President Joseph Boakai for ensuring that 30% of women in his Cabinet, with women holding key ministerial and deputy minister positions.
