Pres. Boakai Calls for Special Nat’l Legislative Session

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President Joseph Boakai has issued a Proclamation, calling for a Special Session of the 55th National Legislature.

The Session will run from Thursday, August 29 to Thursday, September 19, 2024.

According to a Foreign Ministry release issued on Monday, August 26, 2024, members of the National Legislature are expected to deliberate on critical national issues, including the Proposed Recast Budget.

The release said the Proclamation is consistent with Article 32 (b) of the Liberian Constitution.

Article 32(b) of the Constitution gives the President the authority to extend or call a Special Session of the National Legislature upon receiving a certificate signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each House.

Meanwhile, the 55th National Legislature is expected to reconvene regular sessions for three weeks, beginning Thursday, August 29 to September 19, 2024.

According to a joint release from the House of Representatives and the Senate, the National Legislature will act on several time-sensitive legislations and Draft Recast Budget.

It followed the signing of a certificate consistent with Article 32(b) of the 1986 Liberian Constitution.

The release said the reconvening of the National Legislature will now see members of the August body cutting short their second quarterly break which commenced on July 20 and is expected to end on October 11.
