MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Calm has returned to ArcelorMittal Company in Nimba County following mediation by the Internal Affairs Minister Francis Nyumalin.

In recent days, traditional bushmasters in the County set up roadblocks at the Company’s mining areas, paralyzing its operations.

As part of the negotiation, the Company will begin immediate road rehabilitation to affected communities.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Internal Affairs Ministry and other Government inter-agencies have agreed to work along with ArcelorMittal and affected communities to address immediate demands in thirty days.

At the same time, Minister Nyumalin said:” The Government is committed to working along with ArcelorMittal to implement its concession agreement with the people of Nimba County.”

Meanwhile, Internal Affairs Minister Nyumalin has warned traditional leaders across the country to refrain from interfering with civil matters.

Minister Nyumalin said:” Such practice by the traditional bush masters contravenes the core values of civil administrative structure at the detriment of the Country and investors.”

He stressed that the Government of Liberia will not allow traditional bushmasters to intimidate and obstruct companies’ operations.

The Internal Affairs Minister Boss sounded the caveat on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at the end of negotiations between ArcelorMittal and residents of some mining communities in Nimba County.
