Election Coordinating Committee Releases Preliminary Observation Findings…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Election Coordinating Committee (ECC) has released its preliminary observation findings on the just-ended Senatorial and Representative By-elections in Nimba and Grand Gedeh Counties.

According to the ECC, the by-elections were conducted peacefully with no incidents of violence at campaign rallies.

ECC said NEC ensured timely delivery of election materials to all polling places in areas affected by the by-elections.

The ECC urged the National Elections Commission to treat all electoral disputes equally, if any, and adjudicate them promptly and transparently.

The ECC recommended to the NEC timely public information of any challenge hindering the announcement of the final results.

It urged political parties and independent candidates with grievances on the outcome of the election results to follow the due process of law and refrain from inciting their supporters to violence.

At the same time, the National Elections Commission will later today announce the winners of Tuesday’s Senatorial and Representative By-Elections in Nimba and Grand Gedeh Counties.

Thursday’s provisional results released so far by the Commission put Unity Party’s Candidate, Nya Twayen, ahead of the other three candidates, with  66, 516 votes, amounting to 61.12 percent.

Mr. Twayen is followed by People’s Unification Party Candidate, Samuel Kogar, with 37, 557 votes, constituting 34.51 percent.

In the Grand Gedeh County Representative By-Election, the NEC has released a hundred percent of the results, putting Independent Candidate Jeremiah Sokan in a comfortable lead, after obtaining 3,168 votes, representing 13.3 percent.

The winners will fill the vacant seats following the election of Nimba County Senator, Jeremiah Koung, as Vice President of Liberia, and the death of Grand Gedeh County District One Representative, Errol Madison Gwion.
