UN Women Commits to Female Genital Mutilation Elimination…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-UN-Women has re-assured its steadfast commitment to ensuring Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other harmful traditional practices are eliminated in Liberia.

Recently, FGM was banned in Liberia through a ritual process spearheaded by the National Traditional Council of Liberia in partnership with UN Women and others.

UN-Women-Liberia Country Representative Comfort Lamptey said:” Efforts are being worked out to ensure legislation to enforce the ban on FGM in Liberia.”

Madam Lamptey lauded the work of the traditional leaders in championing the fight to end FGM while simultaneously acknowledging the commitment of the Legislature.

According to her, the UN Women will continue to work alongside religious and traditional leaders to elevate the rights of women and girls in Liberia.

The UN-Women Country Representative termed as powerful the involvement of traditional leaders, particularly in ensuring the ban on FGM practice.

Madam Lamptay has also announced the launch of the Regional Accountability Framework to support the work of religious and traditional leaders in ending FGM and other harmful traditional practices.

She was speaking Monday in Monrovia at the start of a 2-day regional consultation workshop on the role of traditional and religious leaders in ending FGM.
