Criminal Court “A” to Sentence Former Chief Justice Scott, Three Others Today

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Criminal Court “A” will today, Thursday, sentence former Chief Justice of Liberia Gloria Musu-Scott, Rebecca Wisner, Gertrude Newton, and Alice Johnson for murdering Charloe Musu at their Brewerville residence on February 22, last year.

Cllr. Scott and her three family members were found guilty by a twelve-man jury trial at Criminal Court “A” on December 21, last year with eleven for and one against.

The sentencing will be based on a report from the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation on fact-finding of their behavior, to determine a life sentence or a jail term of twenty-five years or more.

The former Chief Justice and others were arrested in February after the incident, underwent investigations by the Liberia National Police, and were formally charged with murder.

Meanwhile, the Supreme of Liberia Justice in Chambers has placed a stay order on the confirmation of the Presidential Nominee for Associate Justice, Cllr. Frank Musa Dean.

The Stay Order by Associate Justice Jamesetta Howard Wolokollie was a result of a sixteen-count petition for a Writ of Prohibition filed by the Unity Party (UP).

The petition argued that the request of early retirement by Justice Joseph Nagbe on grounds of ill health does not in any way constitute retirement or create a vacancy on the Supreme Court Bench.

They argued that the retirement of the Chief Justice, Associate Justices, and Judges is clearly defined by Article 72 (b) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia.

Justice Nagbe, according to the UP, is not qualified for retirement by law and as such there is no vacancy on the Supreme Court Bench to warrant nomination of Minister Musa Dean.

The Justice in Chambers has instructed the Liberian Senate and Minister Musa Dean to file their returns on or before January 8, with legal arguments in the case scheduled for January 9 before the Supreme Court Full Bench.
