African Union Endorses Liberia’s Candidature for Non-Permanent Member…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The African Union (AU) has finally endorsed Liberia’s candidature for a non-permanent member seat on the United Nations Security Council for term 2027-2027.

It followed a similar endorsement from the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government last week in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, at its 63rd Ordinary Session.

According to a release issued recently, the decision to endorse Liberia’s candidature was adopted on July 14, 2023, in Nairobi, Kenya, at the 43rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the AU.

It was a reaffirmation of earlier endorsement by the AU Ministerial Committee on Candidatures in 2022.

The 43rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council was convened under the AU’s theme for the year 2023:” Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation”.

Meanwhile, the AU 5TH Mid-Year Coordination Conference between the AU and Regional Economic Communities/Regional Mechanism is currently taking place at its Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, the Liberian Government has commended the AU for endorsing Liberia’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sarah Fyneah, lauded the AU for the decision on behalf of Foreign Minister, Dee-Maxwell Kemayah.

She said:” The Liberian Government requested early consideration of its candidature and further mobilized ECOWAS to endorse Liberia, as the only candidate for the West African region.”

Ambassador Fyneah expressed Liberia’s appreciation for the regional support of ECOWAS and the solidarity of the AU and looks forward to the actualization of their support during the elections in 2025.
