Liberia Pushes for Support of Its Bid on the UN Security Council…..

BISSAU, GUINEA-BISSAU-Liberia has begun lobbying fellow ECOWAS member states to support its bid on the United Nations Security Council.

It would be the second time that the country, as one of the founding members of the UN, to serve on the Council, if considered.

Liberia’s Ambassador to Nigeria and Representative to ECOWAS’s ongoing 90th Ordinary Session of Council of Ministers, Al-Hassan Conteh, made the disclosure on Thursday, July 6, 2023, in an interview with ELBC on the sideline of the event in Guinea-Bissau.

Ambassador Conteh said:” Liberia’s bid is being championed by President George Weah, who believes that the time is now for the country to access itself again as one of the oldest members of the UN.”

The Liberian Ambassador, who is representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Council of Ministers in Guinea-Bissau, said the country’s position is in solidarity with member states.

Meanwhile, Ministers of the Council of Ministers in ECOWAS are debating several issues at the ongoing 90th Ordinary Session.

Liberia is being represented by Ambassador Al-Hassan Conteh, Ambassador to Nigeria, and Assistant Finance Minister for Budget, Jesse Korboi.

In his opening address on Thursday, July 6, 2023, ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Alius Touray of the Gambia, urged the Council to give serious consideration to the 202 3 interim report, which highlights the state of the organization, integration, and current financial situation.

Dr. Touray also said:” The establishment of a Permanent Representative Committee to play an advisory role of the Commission must be a priority during the ongoing deliberation.”

For her part, the President of the Council of Ministers, Guinea-Bissau Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation, Suzi Charla Barbors, called on the ECOWAS Commission to carry out the practical implementation of resolutions from the meetings.
