MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The University of Liberia (UL) has suspended student politics with immediate effect.

A release issued recently quotes the UL Administration as saying its decision is based on violent disturbances by students on the UL Campus.

The release further mandates students to keep in strict conformity, as violators risk severe sanction in keeping with the Revised Student Handbook.

The UL Administration also directs that no political group shall assemble, hold meetings or engage in political-related activities on any of the campuses of the University during this suspension.

According to the release, the suspension affects solidarity marches, political gatherings and the wearing of symbols and emblems promoting campus based political groups.

In a related development, the UL Administration has commissioned an independent investigation to probe the Monday’s disturbances.

The Investigation Committee is headed by the Director of the Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation and, Professor Debey Sayndee.

The UL Administration has also condemned the disturbances in the strongest term.

The release further quotes the UL Administration as assuming its commitment to the protection and safety of all students, staff and users of the facilities and services of the University.

Meanwhile, the Justice Ministry has mandated Police Inspector General, Patrick Sudue, to launch an investigation into Monday’s disturbances on the main campus of the University of Liberia.

A MICAT release quotes the Justice Ministry as also ordering the police to submit a report establishing the circumstances which led to the destruction of properties during the incident.
