Pres. Weah wants State of Emergency extended

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has submitted to the House of Representatives for consideration, an extension of the State of Emergency by additional thirty days.

In a communication to the body Tuesday, June 30, 2020, President Weah underscored the effect of COVID-19 on the economy and human lives, while boosting of progress made to contain the virus.

The President said:” The need to extend the State of Emergency cannot be overemphasized, as Liberians are reneged in adhering to the sanctioned health protocol, resulting to daily increase in COVID-19 cases.”

He added that health officials have warned against complacency, which could undermine progress made by Government and partners against the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary, Health and Ways and Means are expected to review the instrument and report next Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

At the same time, President George Weah is seeking ratification of a financing agreement by the House of Representatives, to harmonize and improve statistics of West Africa Project.

In a communication to the House of Representatives Tuesday, June 30, 2020, President Weah revealed that the agreement is between Liberia and the International Development Association (IDA).

The communication said under the agreement, IDA extends to Liberia an amount equivalent to fifteen-million United States Dollars as credit, and little over ten-million US Dollars as grant.

According to ELBC Reporter, the project is aimed at s strengthening the statistical system of participating countries, including Liberia, to harmonize, produce, disseminate and enhance statistics.

The instrument has been forwarded to the Committee on Ways and Means and Judiciary to report within a week.
